Obituary for Federico M. V. Tamayo

Federico M.V. Tamayo, U.S. Army Lt. Col. Retired, 70, of Radcliff, KY, passed away on Veterans Day, 11 November 2018 after a long term illness. He was born in Passi City, Philippines and graduated from Seaside High School, Monterey, California, Summa Cum Laude and Salutatorian in 1967.

After high school, he attended Santa Clara University on an ROTC scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Fred paved the way at Santa Clara University for his sister, Cpt. Rita M.K. Tamayo, U.S. Army Military Police. She became the first female ROTC University Commander in the nation.

Dr. Tamayo also completed his Masters and Doctorate Degree in Clinical Psychology from Washington State University. He went on to serve 20 years active duty in the United States Army Medical Corp; serving various military posts in the United States and abroad: Fort Sam Huston, TX, Fort Lewis, WA, Manheim Germany, Fort Gordon, GA, Tripler Army Hospital, Hawaii, Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, DC. Dr. Tamayo also trained at Fort Lewis, WA to become a Clinical Neuro-Psychologist and went on to teach and train future U.S. Army Medical Corp. Clinical Psychologists.

While serving in Manheim Germany, Fred met his future wife, Beverly, for the first time. They would later meet again, ten years later and marry at Fort Gordon, Georgia where she was in the Army Nurse Corp.

After retirement, Dr. Tamayo moved his family to Radcliff, KY and worked for Communicare at Radcliff, Brandenburg and Elizabethtown Clinics. He also taught for the following Universities, Boston University, Sullivan University, Western Kentucky University, and Elizabethtown Community College.

He was preceded in death by his father, Major Frederic Tamayo, U.S. Army Infantry and a WWII Philippino Scout; his mother Prsicilla Velez Tamayo, his sister, Cpt. Rita M.K. Tamayo, U.S. Army, and Baby Tamayo.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Morton Tamayo, a daughter, Dr. Kelsey Tamayo and her husband SP4 Jonathan Staub; a sister-in-law, Jennifer Foster Vanaernam, and a number of nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, KY with military honors with Rev. Daniel Lincoln officiating.
