Obituary for Betty Gibbons Wilder

Betty Gibbons Wilder
May 18, 1940 - October 21, 2018

Betty Sue Pittman Gibbons Wilder passed away peacefully after an extended illness on October 21, 2018 at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown, KY.
She was born May 18th, 1940, the first born and much loved daughter of Sarah Jane Hoskins Pittman Cox (1922-2015) and McKinley Pittman (1921 - 1993) who both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ronnie Bay Pittman (1945-1967) and Donald Wayne Pittman (1943-1980), and her husband, Lowell Gibbons (1935-2004).
She had fond memories of growing up in coal camps in Bell County where her father was a miner and her mother was a homemaker who delighted in feeding every stranger that came along. Her extended family was very close and included aunts, uncles and cousins some of which she remained close to until her passing.
She graduated from Bell County High in 1957 and soon met a handsome airman home on leave. They married and began to raise a family while he studied at Eastern Kentucky University to become a teacher. The family of three settled in Flaherty, KY, far from their roots but where Lowell found a teaching position at Flaherty Elementary School. Betty eventually went to work at Elizabethtown Sportswear where she worked and built lifetime friendships until her retirement. Their family grew again in 1968 when they welcomed a daughter.
After Lowell’s passing in 2004, she reconnected with a recently widowed old friend, JC Wilder. They were married in 2007. His family loved and embraced her and she found the big family that she’d always wanted.
She is survived by her husband, JC Wilder; son Roland Gibbons (Ellen Gibbons); daughter Veronica Terry; grand children, Elijah Gibbons (Kimberly Macdonald), McKinley Gibbons, Hannah Terry (Jordan Anglin) and Logan Terry (Leigha); step children, Greg Wilder, (Sharon Wilder), James Wilder, (Sherri Wilder), and Jay Wilder; step grandchildren, Ryan Wilder, Jared Wilder, Josh Wilder; and two step great-grandchildren; aunt, Amanda Hoskins; sister in law, Nancy Taylor; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. (EDT) on October 24th, and at Creech Funeral Home, Middlesboro, KY, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. (EDT) on October 26th. Family will receive visitors from Noon to 2 p.m. on October 27th at the Brownies Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Miracle, KY, funeral will follow. Burial will be in the Cubbage Cemetery.
